Instead of doing the usual bast through Haast on the way to Wanaka, we decided to head further south to the end of the road at Jackson Bay.  It's a 50km-ish trip from Haast down a great road with little traffic. The settlement is a collection of cribs, a fish processing plant, a long wharf, and the Cray Pot.  We got there about an hour before it opened (hours are 12-4pm-ish), so walked over to Smoothwater Bay, which took about 15min one way.Although where wasn't any blue cod on the menu as the boats hadn't come in yet, the fish and chips was one of the best I've tasted.  And the whitebait fritters were more whitebait than fritter.  Not a cheap lunch, but delicious.  http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?hl=en&tab=wlhttp://www.westcoastnz.com/visit/visit_Haast_JacksonBay/http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g1988990-d1996322-r98967719-The_Cray_Pot-Haast_South_Island.html

They make a good cup of coffee as well, and it's a lovely place. If you don't mind a bit of gravel, the detour down to the Cascade saddle (go straight on where the Jackson road swings right, IIRC) is well worth the views.
